The Case for a Westfield Avenue Traffic and Safety Audit

As the Democratic Party’s candidate for the Fourth Ward Town Council Seat, my priority is ensuring that Clark’s growth benefits our residents rather than burdens them. Right now, one of the most pressing issues facing our township is the disjointed, piecemeal redevelopment along the Westfield Avenue corridor.

We are witnessing significant projects being approved here without a comprehensive master strategy. The demolition of the former A&P/Foodtown site, the recent conversion of the former Bernie’s Auto into a CVS, and the loss of the historic Emma King House to make way for a daycare center development are all happening concurrently. Adjacent properties also appear to have projects in the pipeline. When paired with existing traffic pressures from the Garden State Parkway, this lack of cohesive planning creates serious hazards.

Residents are right to be concerned about the cumulative impact this unchecked development will have on traffic congestion, emergency vehicle response times, and pedestrian safety, especially for our local students and families navigating areas near popular spots like the local Dairy Queen.

Clark’s growth demands more proactive measures from its town council to improve its infrastructure. If elected, I will call for an immediate and rigorous traffic safety audit of the Westfield Avenue corridor. We need a town council that demands accountability in the planning process and ensures that infrastructure keeps pace with commercial and residential expansion.
